If you are a member of Facebook, TicketMaster, Stumbleupon or Twitter, you are probably familiar with these application's antispam mechanism, using reCaptcha. reCaptcha, unlike other anti-spam captcha mechanisms, which offers jumbled up text and/or numbers, or a math question, presents the user with 2 unrelated words whose appearance resemble scanned text out of a book.
The reCaptcha image looks something like this.
Millions of subscribers have utilized the reCaptcha service to help them protect their websites from robotic spammers. When it comes to Joomla!(R), you might want to consider using reCaptcha as well in your website if you support any forms interface in your pages. reCaptcha is a subscription service. Therefore, you will need to sign up at recaptcha.net and obtain a FREE account. You can apply for a public and private key for every single website you wish to embed reCaptcha.
There are several Joomla!(R) extensions currently supporting reCaptcha in their applications, including ALF Contact, Alpha Recommend, among others. There is even a Joomla!(R) plugin for reCaptcha, called JEZ reCaptcha Integrator. This plugin is a G-d sent! reCaptcha.net provides plugin supports for various programming platforms, including PHP, Java, Perl, etc. Joomla, being a PHP-driven platform, is compatible with recaptcha's PHP library. However, with the special Joomla!(R) plugin from JEZ, one only has to type in one line of code in order to integrate reCaptcha into their application. How easy could that be?
We at JoomlaIsrael.net have taken the liberty of integrating reCaptcha using JEZ's plugin in the following spam-friendly standard forms from Joomla!(R) 1.5:
